Still in good shape

We can safely say that he is one of the best left-wingers in the history of men's handball in Veszprém, who strengthened the club of the royal city for ten yearsand during that time won sixteen championships and thirteen Hungarian Cups. Since retiring, 44-year-old Gergő Iváncsik has been working with kids and is currently employed at One Veszprém HC academy. However, he cannot tear himself away from his beloved sport or regular exercise: he trains several times a week and pays close attention to his diet.

The promising talent from Győr – whose father, Mihály Iváncsik, was a star player for Rába ETO in the 1980s, often rubbing salt into the wounds of János Gyurka Fotex KCV, confirmed at the turn of the millennium that, after countless victories and successes, he deserved a place in the history books of the Bakony club. Gergő, who remained loyal to our team until the end of his career, not only won domestic titles, but also played at Champions League finals, was a KEK winner eighteen years ago, and was selected for the national team in 2010. And to top it all off, last year he was inducted into the continental federation's Hall of Fame. The athlete, who was awarded the Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit, was also voted Hungarian Handball Player of the Year in 2010. He was a member of our national team for seventeen years and finished fourth with his teammates at two Olympic Games, in Athens in 2004 and in London in 2012. He played 718 matches for the Veszprém sports club scoring 2,262 goals. He has been working at the club's academy since 2017. It seems that he has found his place among the youth coaches.

"When I was still playing, I was always driven to improve from time to time, to constantly develop, and to achieve all this while wearing the jersey of the most successful domestic club. I am currently working to ensure that the kids under my wing have similar goals,"

– said Iváncsik, who is currently coaching the U12 team, but previously worked with the U15 team for three years at Veszprém Handball Academy.

"In order to present the movements and tasks to be learned in our training sessions as realistically as possible, and so that I don't accidentally injure myself while performing them, I need to be in good shape, even if I'm not in peak condition. As a result, exercise has remained a part of my life to this day. Of course, I don't train as hard or as much as I used to, but I make sure to maintain a generally active lifestyle."

After his unparalleled career in Veszprém, the star player of Bajnok DSE in Nemesvámos and ESE in Szombathely revealed that he does strength, weight, and cardio training three to four times a week at home. This way, even if he does not further develop his muscle strength, he maintains it, and the exercises have a positive effect on their endurance, and last but not least, they can also help focus on his body awareness. While increasing functional abilities, exercise is a preventive measure against the development of possible injuries and helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

"I usually do these workouts at home, in a relatively small space. I already have a series of well-established routines that last for three quarters of an hour"

 – he said, then added in response to our question: you also have to pay attention to your diet from time to time. Well, not too much, because if he lets himself go, the scale will only show a few pounds more. Of course, you can get rid of this extra weight with a little exercise.

Later, I learn that running has long been included in the list of sports on the "menu," but last year, it was temporarily removed, or more precisely, he didn't force himself to do it, but this spring he wants to put his running shoes back on.

"I admit I don't like running in cold or bad weather, so I prefer to stay at home, but when the sun comes out, I try to rack up the miles. A few years ago, I "had" to join a group of friends who were attempting to complete UltraBalaton. Although I feel that I was just a substitute, I found my place in this easy, but nevertheless exceptionally good atmosphere, I "solved" the ten kilometers assigned to me. I'd rather leave this kind of thing to athletes who are better prepared than me and who devote more time and energy to longer-distance running,"

- said the former star, who can do his job with joy and love, because no matter where our conversation turns, he always talks about his students with sparkling eyes.

"In our U12 league, there is no such thing as a championship series, 'only' rounds and tournaments, in which we generally achieve good results. Our current team also has some talented kids who can go far. I enjoy working with them, I can see that the kids are improving all the time, so it's worth taking care of them. When I finished my active career and started working with the little ones, I felt that I would be the kind of coach who would never want to sit on the bench of an adult team, but since then my opinion has changed somewhat, as I would not rule out similar work in the future. However, I must emphasize that I need more routine and experience to move up. Fortunately, I have learned a lot from my former teammates, Ivó Diaz and Tamás Rapatyi, but I'm not ready to make the switch yet. Just as I worked my way up on the handball court when I was young, I am now working my way up on the bench, and then we'll see what happens with my plans. But what's most important right now is that I really enjoy working with kids."
