Blue skies and rippling water

SUP, or stand-up paddleboarding, is one of the most popular and easiest water sports to learn, a sport that anyone can try regardless of age or gender, because in addition to being a relaxing form of recreation, it provides an effective, safe, and a form of exercise that can be tailored to the individual. Located at the southwestern tip of the “Hungarian Sea,” Balatonberény will once again host Balaton SUP Festival this year. It is not a competition, but rather an event offering a great time for the whole family, where you can try out “paddleboarding” programs, anyone can test their “skateboarding” skills.

The magic of SUP, or stand-up paddleboarding, lies in the fact that while it offers meditative mental relaxation and physical exercise, it allows us to discover nature from a new perspective. The gentle sway of the waves and the proximity of the water soothe the mind; as we paddle on the board, we can leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind us, but to maintain balance, the core, abdominal, back, and leg muscles must work continuously. It’s as if we were participating in a low-impact cardio workout, since SUP moves our body and burns calories without putting strain on our legs, and it also improves coordination and posture, and since we usually stand on the “paddleboard,” we can glimpse the world beneath the water’s surface and among the reeds. Since this type of paddling requires no prior training, you can learn how to use it in just a few minutes— reportedly easier to master than swimming or cycling— last year in Balatonberény, they came up with a bold idea and launched their tradition-creating festival, the success of which paved the way for this year’s jamboree.

“The local council members came up with the idea that we could organize an event here that would not only attract locals, but also visitors. They were clearly aware that the westernmost resort on the southern coast boasts unparalleled natural features and nearly eight kilometers of shoreline, offering countless possibilities. A team of volunteers, with the support of the municipality and Balaton Green Corner Tourism Association, established this previously unknown festival in the Balaton region, which contributes to a healthier lifestyle for participants, increases their activity levels, and, last but not least, introduces them to the unique local nature,”

– says Rita Temesvári, one of the event’s organizers, seemingly implying that SUP combines the tranquility of nature with physical activity, while allowing you to unwind as you float on the water.

As she explains, this year’s festival is also a series of events where sports meet the summer atmosphere of Lake Balaton and the joy of community. Special activities and exercise programs await the kids, so the event promises to be just as fulfilling for them. After a group warm-up with music, the tour will head to the mouth of the Zala River, but there will also be SUP skill and speed competitions, water biking and kiteboarding, strength training, yoga on the shore and on the SUP, as well as water aerobics. The hosts invite those interested to join them for SUP yoga and a tour at sunset, who can also enjoy a concert by the band Wanted a Dream. Further information and everything you need to register can be found at www.balatonzoldsarka.eu.

Rita Temesvári explained to us: their event is an ideal choice even if you’re just getting acquainted with the art of staying on the board, but even if you’re already an experienced SUP paddler, you won’t be bored. This festival, which spans generations, welcomes families, groups of friends, and anyone looking for active recreation.

“Throughout the day, fun-filled water and beach activities—which get everyone moving but aren’t physically strenuous—ensure that people of all ages— from kids to seniors—finds their favorite activity, a form of exercise that interests them and suits their age and physical condition. Here with us, it’s not about performance, but about the time spent together, health maintenance, and joyful movement take center stage. Whether you’re a beginner, an advanced participant, or someone who leads a more active lifestyle, next Saturday everyone can join in the activities at their own pace”

– the organizer adds.

Balaton SUP Festival thus offers exercise, relaxation, and the summer atmosphere of the "Hungarian Sea" all at once. All you need is a large specialized board, the paddle and a bit of balance to discover the world quietly, “walking on water.” The basics can be learned in a short time, so standing on the board usually works out for everyone after a little practice. And once you get the “feel” for it, gliding across the calm water’s surface, you can experience the exhilarating joy of the moment. All you need for this is bright sunshine, a blue sky, rippling water, good music, and all kinds of good-natured people. In Balatonberény, this little gem of a town, you’ll soon be able to row together and have a great time.
