The Pride of the European Region of Sport Named President of the European Sports Federation
An outstanding Hungarian and Veszprém County artists successfully concluded the European Transplantand Dialysis Patients. Alexandra Gyurkó from Herend not only returned home with five swimming medals, but also achieved a historic success in sports diplomacyand was unanimously elected president of the European Sports Federation for Transplant and Dialysis Patients. The Veszprém-Balaton European Sports Region 2026 team is particularly proud of Alexandra, as she played a prominent role ininclusion program.
The Hungarian national team delivered an exceptional performance, finishing fourth in the overall medal standings with an impressive total of 95 medals. Liver transplant recipient Alexandra Gyurkó contributed five of those medals in the swimming events. Competing in the 18–29 age group, she won a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, silver medals in the 50-meter backstroke and the 50- and 400-meter freestyle events, and a bronze medal in the 100-meter freestyle.
In Arnhem, Alexandra's role extended well beyond the pool. She also served as the Hungarian team's team manager, playing a leading role in organizing, supporting, and coordinating the national delegation.
A Historic European Sports Leadership Appointment
During the Championships, the Herend native received an extraordinary honor: she was unanimously elected President of the European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Federation. This appointment represents not only international recognition for Hungarian transplant sports but also a remarkable personal achievement. A young sports leader whose own life story demonstrates what it means to transform a second chance into a thriving community, a shared purpose, and a hopeful future has now been entrusted with leading the organization at the European level.
Our region has also benefited immensely from Alexandra's exceptional commitment to community building and her dedication to inclusion. We are tremendously proud that she contributed to the development of the Veszprém-Balaton European Region of Sport's inclusion program. Her personal experience, professional expertise, and unique perspective helped ensure that the everyday benefits of physical activity and the community-building power of sport are truly accessible to everyone in our region—including people with disabilities, those with special needs, and individuals living with chronic health conditions.
