In Veszprém, handball is not just a sport—it’s a way of life!

Some cities have historical holidays, and then there is Veszprém, where a sport is capable of creating its own modern-day celebration. In the year of the Veszprém-Balaton European Region of Sport 2026, nothing demonstrates the power of community better than the immensely successful debut of the 1st Veszprém Handball Day.

Handball fundamentally defines Veszprém's international reputation and the everyday lives of its residents. The selection of May 17th as the date was no coincidence: on this day in 1992, the club's predecessor, VÁÉV Bramac SE, captured the Cup Winners' Cup (CWC) trophy against Milbertshofen. Thirty-four years after that cathartic triumph, this date has officially become a prominent day of celebration for the city. The inaugural event was hosted in the legendary "Lion's Den," the Március 15. Street Sports Hall.

As Mayor Gyula Porga aptly put it during the opening ceremony, handball in Veszprém is not merely a sport—it is an absolute religion. What made the event truly special was seeing the legends of the past, the stars of the present, and the great hopes of the future come together on a single, shared court. In perfect harmony with the spirit of the Region of Sport, the program was built around active community experiences, inclusion, and health awareness. Alongside preventive health screenings, visitors were treated to interactive quizzes and archival matches screened in the arena's lobby, allowing them to test not only their physical fitness but also their trivia knowledge.

For the youngest attendees, stepping onto the court was an experience of a lifetime. The children's shortened matches featured a massive twist: former Veszprém handball legends took to the benches as impromptu head coaches, providing extra motivation for the talents of the future. The most adventurous participants could test their skills in a 7-meter penalty shootout, and during one segment, the goal was guarded by icons no lesser than Árpád Sterbik and Nándor Fazekas, true legends of Veszprém handball. This unforgettable day was rounded off with engaging panel discussions featuring former players from the '80s, '90s, and 2000s, including members of the historic 1992 championship team.

Launched with the goal of creating a new tradition, the Veszprém Handball Day served as the perfect dress rehearsal for the club’s upcoming 50th-anniversary jubilee next year. An event was born that perfectly aligns with the objectives of the Veszprém-Balaton European Region of Sport 2026, as it builds community and encourages everyday physical activity.
